  • I’m looking forward to the blogging with Netgear, as I’ll have pretty Laptop Battery open access to their executive team for the next few weeks (of course, I will have to drive all the way down to Santa Clara, which ain’t pretty). One topic definitely on my mind is to see how the company’s doing with regards to revenue-per-employee (back in 2003 they were making $1.4 million per employee), and hear about how that scales (or if it does). I’m also looking forward to catching up with CTO Mark Merrill (who I knew from when I worked for Mediabolic a few years back) dell laptop batteryand CMO Debbie Williams (we met at CES).

     

    So, I hope you get the chance to follow the action over at the Netgear blog (it won’t be all-interviews, I have some other stuff to talk about too!).     I’m amazed at the irony where a service provider who owns the copper lines, can also compete in the market where they provide products to resellers, and then compete against them.     I’m about a month into the Netgear blogging efforts, and having a lot of fun with it.     My Maxtor Shared Storage is starting to die, so I’m looking into a new NAS solution (mom, NAS stands for networked attached storage, and it’s basically like computer memory except attached to the network. it’s not actually computer memory at all, but that’s not important right now). I have an Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ I use at workdell Y9943 battery, and while I think it’s a great device, it’s a little too loud for my home. I’m considering the DroboShare option as well, except I use that at the office too and feel that it plus the drives is more than I want to spend right now for a second unit (disclosure: I have consulted for Drobo in the past).

    My Shared Storage does all of the above, but from user reviews on Amazon, the modern replacements seem to get terrible writeups. I haven’t really researched it, but I assume I cannot simply swap out the drive dell Latitude D620 battery.

    The two I’ve found so far that seem to be the best fit are the Iomega 33455 and the Buffalo LS500GL LinkStation Pro. CNET doesn’t seem to have any clear winners in the category, so that wasn’t much added info. I tried retail, but Best Buy barely stocks any (there was ONE unit in the local store), CompUSA is busy selling the shelving of their fail, and I am just scared of OfficeMax. Anyone have any input/recommendations?

  • Home Renovation: What Tech Do I Need

    My wife and I bought a house a few months ago, and it needs some Laptop Batteryrenovation work (read: holy crap, we’re practically gutting the place, what the heck were we thinking???). One aspect of said work is redoing the entire electrical system, which gives me the opportunity to put in all sorts of cool new tech.

    Things I know I want for sure:

    Sonos as my distributed audio system of choice. We’ll be putting in-ceiling speakers in a few rooms, and they’ll be wired to Sonos units which we’ll have dell laptop batteryclustered in two locations. I debated putting iPod docks in the walls, but they’re pricey, we don’t currently use iPods, and don’t allow for multi-room distribution. Plus this’ll give me a chance to check out their new hardware!
    NETGEAR/Infrant NV NAS to serve media (this replaces my Maxtor Shared Storage Plus which appears to have just died, gah!). In my current apartment I’m a bit leery of the NV as it’s loud and dell 1X793 batterywe don’t have a place to hide it away, but this won’t be a problem in the new spot.
    Current Panasonic plasma + Xbox + Pioneer receiver all move into “JT’s Cool Room (no girls allowed!)”. But the Bose speakers go “buh-bye” and my Definitive towers return! FTW. I’ll probably also hook up a Mac Mini with Boxee on it for photo/Internet streaming.     Things I know I don’t want for sure:

    Things I am on the fence about:

    RJ45 (Ethernet) outlets in every room. Seems like a waste. When I ask my friends, the overwhelming reason for it is “to stream dell Inspiron 5100 battery video around your house”. Now that is really just not a good reason in my opinion, but I do like the idea of future-proofing. Plus I guess it’ll be easier for hooking up printers or other networked devices where wireless is not built-in… ?
    Insteon (or other) smart lighting systems. I’m not a fan of home automation systems (wait, for only $50K I can have my lights turn on and off and I don’t even have to get off the couch? where do I sign up?), but Insteon is dell 6T473 batteryfairly inexpensive and the platform is open enough to hack around with.   • Refilling laptop batteries!
    The Li-Ion battery in my dell laptop battery laptop has been getting a bit long in the tooth. Rated at a 4.4 AH capacity new, /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info told me that it was only holding 1.8 AH now that it was a few years old. (This is normal for Li-Ion batteries, which degrade over time, even without multiple charge-discharge cycles.)
    A brand new IBM (or Lenovo now) battery costs over a hundred dollars, but by shopping around I was able to find a "compatible" battery for as low as $50. It was only rated at 4.4AH, but that is relatively close to the 2nd generation 4.8AH batteries that IBM/Lenovo sell for twice as much. I started to wonder dell Inspiron 6000 battery if it might be cheaper to buy OEM li-ion cells and simply replace the cells (keeping the case, and charge/discharge electronics). The first step would be to determine what type of Li-Ion cells I'd need to buy, so I decided to open up my old battery.
    As you can see, the standard X31 battery has six cells, in three parallel groups of 2. Cells are nominally 3.6volts, so this adds up to 3 x 3.6 or 10.8 volts. In the photo I have removed the shrink wrapped packaging from one cell to view the markings. Note the relatively complicated PCB along the back side of the cells that handles charging and discharging. If you zoom into the photo, you can see that the controller PCB is connected to each end of every pair of cells (orange and black wires to the far ends, silver metal tab connections to the middle two). This allows the controller to dell Inspiron 9300 battery charge each parallel pair of cells at a different rate. The controller PCB is also connected to a thermocouple that is resting between the two middle cells. This gives the controller a temperature reading on the cells during charging and discharging. If the PCB detects that the temperature is too high, it can lower the charging rate, or shut down the power draw (and laptop). Also note the heat fuse (small white block in series with the power line between the two leftmost cells) that is designed to open the circuit if the charge/discharge controller for some reason fails to maintain a safe temperature.     I actually determined what type of li-ion cells were used by measuring them and then looking for li-ion cells of a similar size. They are about 2.5" high by 11/16" diameter, or very close to the 64.9mm x 18.3m diameter size of a 18650 style cell that I found on www.batteryspace.com.
    My battery is rated at 4.4AH, or 4400mAH. As it has three sets of parallel cells, each set of two cells must have a 4400mAH capacity (because they are in series, you add the voltage, not the amperage), so each cell must have a 2200mAH capacity.
    From a mAH per dollar standpoint, dell 310-6321 battery batteryspace.com's 2000mAH cells are the best value, but I decided that since the total cost difference was only six dollars, I could afford purchasing the 2200mAH cells.
